Real facts about Inflation

Inflation: What you didn’t know

t's interesting to put a context to numbers, news headlines and indeed, data in general.
Did you know: Onions + Potatoes < Chicken
In the Wholesale Price Index, which is our only real measure for Inflation at this point, each item is "weighted" to resemble what India might spend. Every item gets a weight which reflects the importance of the price movement of that item, and the weights add up to 100.
Onions, our pet headline, have gone up substantially, which hurts a heck of a lot, you think. But let's look at the weights of Onion compared to, say, other things in the general "Food" area.
Effectively, we weigh Onions very low — lower than Potatoes, Eggs, Ghee, Rice and everything else on this graph.  Potatoes and Onions together are no match for Chicken in the WPI. Chawal and Atta are what make us tick, you might think, but it's the cows that block your highway that are far more important —  Milk is bigger than Rice and Wheat combined. Did you know?
Or, perhaps, it wasn't the onion's weightage; perhaps it was the fact that the prices moved So much, that even someone at the RBI mentioned it in their press conference yesterday. But that seems to be a media creation, because the data shows we need to be worried about other things. Here's the Year on Year price increase in different commodities between December 2009 and December 2010, appropriately multiplied by the WPI change.
We should be worried about those cows, really. Look at what Milk has done! And I sympathize with SUVs, and People who buy cotton shirts and yes, those Chicken Do Pyaaza eaters.
Did you know: Apple's Cash Hoard can buy any Indian Company, save one.
Recently Apple declared its results in the US, and highlighted in them was the small point that they have cash reserves of $59.6 billion. That, if converted to Indian Rupees at Rs. 45 per dollar, gives them enough money to buy, uhm, nearly any listed Indian company.
(Data: NSE, Apple Data releases)
Note: That is just the cash they have; not their own market cap, which is considerably higher. (Apple has no debt) Also note that this is just a theoretical discussion — there is no way that Apple will actually buy any of these companies because it would a) drive up the price beyond their reach, b) change the dollar-rupee equation and c) are you kidding me.
But it provides a context. Financial superpower-dom is at least a while away.
Did you know: It's all in the Options.
Markets have been really active recently, and more and more Indians are buying stocks every day. Or so we think when they show us figures like Rs 140,000 crores traded every day" and so on. But on a closer look, the trading volumes are slightly skewed.
(Data: NSE)
Compared to 2007, Cash and Index Futures turnover are largely the same; Stock futures have taken a bit of a beating (even though a lot more securities exist today) and the big gainer has been Index Options. But that isn't really turnover. Let me explain.
When you buy an option, you pay just the premium — you might pay Rs. 50 to buy a 6,000 Call Option on the Nifty; i.e. you can buy Nifty at 6,000 even if it went to 6,500 — and make the difference. What is recorded as turnover isn't the Rs. 50 — it's the 6,000. And a number of options are bought and sold deep-out-of-the-money — that is, options very far away from the current price. So even if the premium exchanged was Rs. 100 crores, the turnover might show 10,000 crores. Notional values inflate turnover figures substantially.
A good portion of these turnover figures are inflated anyway. A number of intraday traders are given 4x to 10x leverage, even in the cash market, by brokers to do two-way transactions within the trading day; that is, they put up 10,000 rupees and they can buy and sell stocks worth 100,000 rupees, if they square off the transaction within the trading day. This obviously adds to turnover as well, but it is more tangible than options turnover.

IBM's bonanza for its Indian employees

IBMs plan to curb attrition
New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) Technology giant IBM today said it will give USD 1,000 worth of shares to its over one lakh employees in India as part of its centennial celebrations.
IBM, which will celebrate a hundred years of existence on June 16 this year, will give each of its employees globally a USD 1,000 stock bonus.
"IBM employees globally, except those at the executive level, will receive USD 1,000 in stock bonuses," an IBM India spokesperson said.
He, however, declined to comment on IBM''s India headcount, since the company does not disclose country-level employee numbers.
However, industry analysts peg the strength of the company''s India-based workforce at over one lakh. IBM has four lakh employees globally.
"The company is still working on the eligibility criteria for the bonus. However, one of the criteria is that the person has to be an employee (full-timers and part-timers included) of IBM or its wholly-owned subsidiaries before December 31, 2010," he said.
Eligible IBM employees will be offered ''restrictive stock units'' (RSU), under which the employee will be promised returns on the stocks awarded without actually owning them.
This means that at a stock value of USD 159 (on January 28), the USD 1,000 stock bonus will translate into 6-7 stock units.
Also, since these stock incentives will not vest until 2015, anybody quitting the company before June 16, 2015, will no longer be eligible to receive shares.
IBM reported revenues of about USD 100 billion and record free cash flow of USD 16.3 billion in 2010.

Strengthen your body with yoga
Partner yoga is a great way to get creative and enjoy practicing yoga. It allows you to connect with your partner-physically and mentally. You can workout together with you spouse, friend or anyone else. What is great about working with a partner is that you can do the same pose at the same time, intertwine a pose to create a new pose or just support each other during a routine.

Interpol's most wanted Indians

Most wanted Indians

Between January 2008 and September 15, 2010, Interpol issued Red Corner notices for 338 Indian nationals. A Red Corner notice allows a warrant issued by a national authority to be circulated worldwide, with the request that the wanted person be arrested with a view to extradition. Earlier, Interpol had issued 495 Red Corner notices against Indians worldwide between 2001 and 2007.

Interpol, the world's largest international police organisation, has 188 member nations. It facilitates cross-border police cooperation. Interpol statistics put India in the big league of crime-exporting nations. Out of a list of 7,858 wanted persons, 369 are Indians. That is a higher number than notices issued to persons from the United States (321), China (216), Pakistan (160), the UK (58), Canada (98), Australia (24), Saudi Arabia (27) and Japan (13).

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the "probable reason" for the high number of wanted criminals of Indian origin "could be that most of these subjects are expatriates and living in other countries temporarily for employment purposes".

The list of countries where most of these Indian nationals have committed crimes includes the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Canada and the United States.

INDIA TODAY petitioned the CBI under the Right to Information Act (RTI) for details on the most recent Red Corner notices. According to the CBI reply, of the 338 Red Corner notices issued between 2008 and 2010, only 86 were for crimes committed in India. That means only 25 per cent of the total Red Corner notices against Indians originate because of a crime in their home country. In other words, three-fourths of the crimes committed by Indians that led to Red Corner notices against them, were abroad.

The Red Corner notices against Indian nationals are issued by the General Secretariat of Interpol, Lyon, France, on the recommendation of the CBI, which also acts as the National Central Bureau (NCB) for Interpol.

"Our Interpol wing furnishes the details of all Red Corner notices to the Bureau of Immigration-under the Ministry of Home Affairs-for issuing Look Out Circulars (LoC) against such persons," says a senior CBI official. "The LoCs issued by the Bureau of Immigration are circulated to all immigration checkpoints/border posts in India."

While the premier investigating agency has information about 11 such wanted persons who were arrested in India, it does not have any information about criminals who may have been arrested abroad. Says CBI Deputy Inspector General Anurag, "No such database on the arrest of criminals of Indian origin worldwide is available. However, 11 criminals were arrested during 2010, all of whom were wanted in India and against whom Red Corner notices were issued."

Dawood Ibrahim, arguably one of India's most wanted men and the reason for much friction with Pakistan, has been the subject of a Red Corner notice for long. He is also the subject of another notice called the Interpol-United Nations Security Council Notice, issued to "individuals associated with Al Qaeda and the Taliban, as listed by the UNSC." There are many more Indians to give him company in the red corner.

Legalities stop us from disclosing black money info: Pranab

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) Unfazed by opposition attacks and questions from Supreme Court, Government today maintained that it cannot disclose information received from foreign entities on black money held by Indians abroad because of absence of legal framework.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, however, dismissed opposition criticism that it was not disclosing information because such disclosure could result in the government''s fall.
"Let us understand the issue. No information can be made available unless there is a legal framework. No sovereign country is going to share information unless there is a legal framework," he told a press conference explaining the reasons why the government was not in a position to part with information it has obtained some foreign entities on black money stashed away abroad.
However, he said Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and Exchange of Taxation Information Agreement are two instrumentalities under which information can obtained and the government has already amended pacts with 23 countries to get information from banks.
"But the problem is information which we have obtained has come under some conditions of secrecy. Today, if we disclose tomorrow other countries will not give me the information raising an accusing finger that you do not meet international commitments," he said.
However, Mukherjee said "there is a way. As and when the Income Tax Authorities will be in a position to prosecute cases against tax evaders you will come to know".
"Even I have no intention or authority of knowing the names (of those who have stashed black money abroad). The Income Tax officers have statutory powers under which they perform their duties and they are outside the purview of the administrative control of the ministry," Mukherjee said

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

Indian IT sector seems to have come back to its record-breaking hiring days, with a top industry player Infosys projecting up to 1.8 lakh employees being hired by the five largest companies alone this year.
Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys
"Growth is back and most companies are hiring in large numbers again. The top five companies are estimated to hire 1,60,000 to 1,80,000 new employees in the next 12 months," Infosys CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan said here.
Such large-scale hiring activities were last witnessed in 2007 by Indian IT companies, after which they had to cut back on hiring and even prune their existing headcount to cope up with the economic slowdown.
"In 2008, the industry saw growth coming down to single digit. Most IT companies stopped hiring employees and stopped expanding," Mr. Gopalakrishnan said at a discussion on 'sustainable Development Strategies' organised by College of Architecture here last evening.
Mr. Gopalakrishnan said that the growth was now back in the sector and the companies were expanding their headcount.
He further said, "The IT industry has grown fast over the last 15 years. For example, the industry had about 1.50 lakh employees in 1993, around five lakh employees in 1999 and today, the industry employs around 2 million employees."
The highest-ever hiring in the IT space was seen in 2007, when more than four lakh jobs were created in Indian IT space by all the companies together.

TCS to hire 37,000 from campuses next fiscal

TCS to hire 37,000 from campuses next fiscal

Mumbai: IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), today said it plans to hire 37,000 professionals for its domestic and overseas markets through campus placements in the next fiscal.
"We plan to hire 37,000 professionals through campus recruitments in FY 12. We have so far visited 171 institutions pan-India," TCS Head (Global Human Resources), Ajoyendra Mukherjee, told reporters here.
"Our hiring ratio will be around 54:46 trainee and lateral respectively," he said.  The company had hired 27,500 professionals through campus recruitment last year.
"The demand is strong and we hope it will continue to grow in the coming days," he said.
The country's largest software exporter said it has hired 50,000 personnel in the nine-month period ended December 2010 and expects to add another 12,000-15,000 in Q4.
TCS added 20,219 people (gross) during the quarter (Q3 FY 11), its highest addition yet, taking its total headcount to 1,86,914 at the end of the December quarter.
"Given the strength of business demand, we have exceeded the hiring target of 50,000 employees we had set for this fiscal year," Mukherjee said.
TCS CEO and Managing Director, N Chandrasekaran , had yesterday said the company faces the major challenge of attrition.
"Our short-term challenge is we have to continue to retain people although the attrition rate has come down in Q3 FY 11," Chandrasekaran had said.

Big Fraud in US Around 1599 Students are cheated by the TRI VALLEY UNIVERSITY

Washington, 25 January 2011: Hundreds of Indian students, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, face the prospect of deportation from the US after authorities raided and shut down a university in the Silicon Valley on charges of a massive immigration fraud.

The Tri-Valley University in Pleasanton, a major suburb in San Francisco Bay Area, has been charged by federal investigating authorities with being part of an effort to defraud, misuse visa permits and indulge in money laundering and other crimes.

According to a federal complaint filed in a California court, the University, which was raided and shut down last week, helped foreign nationals illegally acquire immigration status. The university is said to have 1,555 students. As many as 95 per cent of these students are Indian nationals, the complaint said.

Investigations by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) found that while students were admitted to various residential and online courses of the university and on paper lived in California, in reality they "illegally" worked in various parts of the country as far as Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

ICE has called it as a "sham university." The ICE investigations found that more than half of these students were reported to be residing in a single apartment located in Sunnyvale California.

During the course of the investigation ICE found that the university gave the residential address of its students in order to conceal that they did not live in California, said the court papers. For a student to maintain an active immigration status, they must show proof that they are making reasonable process towards completing coursework and physically attend classes.

Federal investigating authorities are now sweeping out on each of those students, who paid lakhs for obtaining students visa and also students work permit. Several of them have been interrogated, creating a panic reaction among the Indian student community.

Many of the students from Andhra Pradesh, who were planning to join the university for the new semester, have cancelled their US travel plans. Classes were scheduled to start on January 10 after the winter break.

It is understood that many of these students are planning to leave the country as soon as possible as they are being interrogated.

There are unconfirmed reports of some of the students being detained and deportation process has been started against them. Once the university has been shut down, the students who come on F-1 visa, lose their status within a stipulated time. These students have been making desperate calls to Indian- American immigration attorneys.

"We have received verification that ICE has detained some of the students and placed them in removal proceedings," Murthy Law Firm, a popular immigration attorney firm among Indian-Americans, said in a posting on its website.

On January 20, 2011 the Murthy Law Firm received numerous phone calls from students registered at Tri-Valley University in Pleasanton, California, it said in its posting.

"Some of the F-1 Tri-Valley students may have options to try to change status in the United States. Some are potentially eligible to request a change to H-4 or other dependant statuses.

"Others might be eligible for H1B status through employers, but may not have enough time to file for the soon-to-be reached FY 2011 H1B cap. Those who have previously held H1B status and do not need cap numbers would not face this problem," advised the Murthy Law Firm.

Tri-Valley University, on its website, says that it is a Christian Higher Education Institution aiming to offer rigorous and excellent quality academic programmes in the context of Christian faith and world view. It offers a wide range of courses. According to the complaint, the university and its founder Susan Su have made millions of dollars in tuition fee for issuing visa-related documents that enabled hundreds of foreign nationals to obtain illegal student immigration status.

Calls were made to various telephone numbers listed on the Tri Valley website but either the voice mail box was full or the number was not accepting any new calls.

According to the court document, ICE began its investigations in May 2010. In February 2009, the university received necessary permission to issue visas for 30 students and in May that year it had some 11 active students who had F-1 visas. The number jumped to 939 by May 2010.

Gambhir is top scorer with $2.4 mn in IPL 4 Auction

Gambhir bagged $2.4 million from Kolkata Knight Riders, which in turn proved to be the highest bid for the day besides being the most expensive in the brief history of the league, tripping past the previous highs of Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen (both at $1.55 million) in 2009 and M.S. Dhoni ($1.5 million) in 2008.

Team India proved why it is in number 1 position in test Rankings

Cape Town test ends in a draw, England win the Ashes, Anil Kumble quits IPL and lots more. Take a look.
MSN Action of the Week
Match Drawn, Series Even
The third and final Test match between India and South Africa ended in a draw. Chasing 340 for a win, Gautam Gambhir top-scored with 64 as India decided to play for a draw. Jacques Kallis was declared the Man-of-the-Match and the Man-of-the-Series. India have enough reason to cheer as this is the first time they have drawn a Test series in South Africa.
Set a daunting target of 340 for a win, India opted to play safe and bat their way to a draw in the third and final cricket Test against South Africa to end the high-profile series 1-1 here. The Indians never made an effort to chase down the stiff target and the batsmen played out time to crawl to 166 for three in their second innings before play was called off to mark the end of a fascinating three-match series.
Although the Indians could not achieve their dream of a maiden away series win over South Africa, it was a creditable achievement for the visitors as they drew a Test series for the first time on the African soil. The result also meant that India maintained their number one ranking. The visitors lost the first Test in Centurion by an innings and 25 runs but showed great character to bounce back and win the second Test in Durban by 87 runs.
The Indians could have entertained hopes of going for the target had Virender Sehwag (11) fired but the dashing opener fell cheaply to end the series without too may runs to his credit. Gautam Gambhir defied an elbow injury and played a resolute knock of 64 to be the highest scorer in the second innings. Sachin Tendulkar (14) and VVS Laxman (32) were at the crease when play was called off after 82 overs.
