Train Travels in Wrong Direction

A train full of commuters travelling from Tirupati to Varnasi went 980 km in the wrong direction before passengers realized what was happening. It was only when the trained pulled into Warangal, a central Indian city on an entirely different route, that they realized something was wrong. The error in route was caused due to incorrect entry of destination code, sending the train five hours away from its destination. “Though the journey was agonising, we thank our stars that the train did not run into another train,”' an angry passenger said.

Some of the staff, who were apparently sleeping on that leg of the journey, said that they did not catch the mistake since it was a special service to Varnasi, and they were unfamiliar with the route. At Warangal station, the superintendent took corrective measures, bringing the train back to where it should have been for its onward journey to Varanasi.

Nokia slips from 1st to 3rd place in smartphone sales

Apple and Samsung Electronics ended struggling Nokia's 15-year reign at the top of the smartphone sales rankings in the second quarter, researchers said on Friday.
Nokia has dominated the smartphone market ever since its 1996 launch of the Communicator model, but competition from its two nearest rivals and a slump in its own sales sent it straight from first to third place in the three months to June as growth in the sector starts to slow.
Apple sold a record 20.3 million iPhones in the quarter despite the fact that its iPhone 4 model is now more than a year old. Usually success of smartphone models does not last so long.
Apple unveiled its sales last week, but on Friday analysts also estimated Samsung sold 19 million smartphones in the quarter, well ahead of Nokia's 16.7 million as it was able to benefit from booming demand with smartphones using Google's Android software.

Jagan Mahal in Hyderabad with 60 rooms across 42000sqft

A palatial house that Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is building in Hyderabad is under the scanner of the CBI, which has been asked by Andhra Pradesh High Court to probe the politician's assets.
Two days ago, CBI sleuths visited a 52,263sqft site (well over an acre) in Hyderabad's upscale Banjara Hills where Jagan's five-storey mansion, valued at Rs 300 crore by local real estate players, is nearing completion.
According to real estate sources, the building plan shows several escalators, lifts, a 200-seat mini-theatre, a library, a gym, and squash, tennis and volleyball courts, apart from a three-floor underground car park.
A local contractor said he had been commissioned to supply 24 train wagonloads of marble from Rajasthan so that about 60 rooms and bathrooms, each the size of a single-bedroom flat, could be floored with marble.
Lotus Mahal, which local people have begun referring to as "Jagan Mahal", will sprawl over a 10,000sqft area. The total floor area across the five storeys is estimated at 42,000 sqft.
CBI officials said the plot had been bought by Jagan's front companies. It is made up of six original plots ' numbered 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 ' at HUDA Heights in Banjara Hills' Lotus Pond locality, they added.
Jagan owns about two-thirds of the property while his sister Sharmila Reddy owns the rest, the sources said. Going by current property rates, the price of the entire plot should be over Rs 30 crore.
Real estate sources said Lotus Mahal would have nearly 30 bedrooms apart from an office complex, 20 servants' quarters and a two-storey outhouse in the backyard.
A builder said that but for the Telangana agitation, the mansion's price would have been Rs 700 crore. "Even at the downswing rates, it is roughly valued at Rs 300 crore."

Top 10 things that prevent an ideal body

A brother-sister team has revealed the top ten things that keep people from attainting their ideal body shape and weight.
Dian Griesel, Ph.D. (Nutrition) and Tom Griesel spent 30 years working with scientific researchers while continuously experimenting with various diets, and found certain things that stop people from maintaining their diets.
Must read health story: Reduce belly fat
"The best of diet intentions fail in late afternoon and evening because dieters fall for certain traps that sabotage success," Dr. Griesel said.
According to the authors, those traps include:
1. Traditional diet and exercise advice that is all wrong.
2. Motivation that is misdirected. The choice needs to be: Which do I value more? A chocolate bar now or a longer and healthier life with my family?
3. Eating when we are really thirsty.
4. Burning the candle too late, is counter productive to fat burning. A good night's sleep burns fat and keeps us from eating.
5. Dieting and aerobic exercising together reduce calories, so primitive starvation-survival mechanisms kick in making the brain scream for food.
6. Boredom.
7. Hanging out with an overeating, unimaginative crowd.
8. Manufacturers make foods addictive by using sugar/fat/salt combos.
9. Manufacturers make foods addictive with chemicals and preservatives.
10. Commercials could make anyone hungry.

Telangana raging again

Telangana is on a short fuse. A restive Andhra Pradesh is reminding the central government that time is running out.

After agreeing to concede statehood for Telangana in 2009, Delhi is now dithering. Home Minister P Chidambaram, who announced he would initiate the process to form a new state that year, is talking about a consultative process again. That's not going to go down well with Telangana proponents. Andhra Pradesh is now ruled by the Congress, a party beseiged by dissent from within and without. It cannot pretend that all is well and carry on.

What's Telangana all about? The northern part of the state feels it is dominated by politicians from the southern and coastal regions of the Telugu country. The 10 districts of Telangana became a part of Andhra Pradesh in 1956, when states were reorganised throughout India. It seems there were many sceptics even then, with prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru openly expressing doubts about the marriage.

Thankfully, there hasn't been much violence, although Osmania University, hub of Telangana activism, has been tense since Tuesday morning. Police lobbed teargas shells and dispersed students supporting the Telangana shutdown.
Both the centre and the state government are under intense pressure as legislators are resigning in huge numbers.
As The Telegraph writes, it's a battle of nerves. At last count, 100 MLAs had resigned from the Andhra Pradesh assembly. That could trigger a constitutional crisis, forcing the imposition of president's rule.

India won the 1st test in jamaica Vs West Indies

India wrapped up a 63-run victory over West Indies in the first test on the fourth day at Sabina Park on Thursday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
West Indies resumed on 131 for three, chasing an unlikely 326 to win, but could manage only 262 on a pitch that offered something to everyone.
"This was a great cricket wicket, that one had lots of shooters and lifters, so kudos to the groundsmen," said Rahul Dravid, after being named man-of-the match.
"I'm enjoying it as much as ever. Days like this, that's what you play for."
West Indies had needed a big second innings score from one of their batsmen to match the 112 from Dravid but none of the home players was able to carry on after making starts.
Seven West Indian batsmen got at least 25 runs but not one went on to make a half-century, with Darren Bravo top-scoring with 41.

India's top 50 engineering colleges

Ranking the top colleges is a very difficult task. While it is relatively easy to create clusters of colleges, it is differentiating within clusters that became the most difficult exercise. So for the first time in the country we have used balanced scorecard methodology to arrive at the ranking of the top 50 colleges. Ranking methodology: We scanned the last five year rankings of about 241 colleges and normalised their ranks, by assigning differential weights to subjective and objective ranking. Such a process is used to develop clusters of institutions. The research standing of individual institutions were further used to refine the clusters and remove the odd men out. Individual clusters were ranked serially. In each of these clusters the differences in cut-off marks, wherever possible (like in case of IITs and AIEEE institutes and some States) were used to arrive at individual ranks. Heavily dominated by public institutions, the top-50 listing is a roll call of excellence India’s top 50 engineering institutions 2011.

No tax return for salary and interest income up to Rs 5 lakh

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) In India, as many as 85 lakh salaried tax payers whose taxable income, including salary and interest income, is up to Rs 5 lakh, are not required to file income-tax return from now onwards.
"No income-tax returns is required for salaried persons whose annual annual taxable income including salary and interest is up to Rs 5 lakh. We would shortly notify this," a Central Board of Direct Taxes official said.
However, he said this would not cover income from other sources like house property, capital gains and gains from profession and business.
The scheme would be applicable from assessment year 2011-12 onwards. This means that the salaried persons eligible under the scheme would not have to file returns for the financial year 2010-11 in 2011-12 (assessment year).
Under the scheme, those salaried persons who want to claim tax refund, would have to file income tax return.
As per the Memorandum to the Finance Bill 2011, the government will be issuing a notification exempting ''classes of persons'' from the requirement of furnishing income tax returns.
Under the scheme, the salaried person wants exemption from filing IT return, has to disclose about the incomes like dividend and interest to his employer for tax deduction.
In the scenario, the Form 16 issued to salaried employees will be treated as Income Tax Return. At present, it is obligatory for all salaried persons to file income tax return under the Income Tax Act, 1961.
The idea behind the move is that in cases where there are no other sources of income, filing of a return is a duplication of existing information.

Things not to do in an interview

You know to turn off your ringer and dress to impress, but the following surprising slips may not be on your radar.

Don't be cocky

Confidence-i.e., appearing composed and sure of yourself as opposed to like a nervous wreck-is always an appealing quality. Arrogance, on the other hand, made 51 percent of employers want to kick an applicant out of their office on the spot. No matter how much of a superstar you were at your last job, don't make it sound as if you single-handedly pulled off every amazing accomplishment.

Little things like bringing a latte with you, pushing aside a pile of papers on an interviewer's desk so you can plunk down your portfolio, or sneaking a glance at the clock can also make you seem self-important-as if your time and stuff are more valuable than theirs are. Another minor goof they see as arrogant: leaving your sunglasses on top of your head.

Say the magic words

Of course you don't want a potential boss to think you're gunning for the role of office kiss-ass, but playing it too cool can wreck your chances. 55 percent of bosses surveyed said a lack of enthusiasm is one of the biggest mistakes that a candidate make. Seriously.

Get the right message across by using words like 'exciting' and 'interesting'. To show you mean it, read up on the company's history and the industry in general before the interview, and slip some of the things you learned into the conversation.

Don't sound rehearsed

Most of us have gotten this well-meaning advice from a career counsellor: when you're asked "What's your biggest weakness? throw out something that's actually good, like "I'm a workaholic or "I am a perfectionist and won't stop until something's done right . Yeah...whatever! 34 percent of interviewers said they definitely notice when you respond to their questions with tired cliches. Granted, you don't want to confess anything truly incriminating, but it's okay to reveal a real weakness, provided you follow it up with how you're working to correct it.

Don't fail the question test

There are only a few minutes left in the interview, and you get what seems like a throw-away: "Do you have any questions for me? Answering "I don't think so can mess up the awesome impression you just made, since 34 percent of bosses said they're turned off when candidates don't ask smart questions. Why? Doing so shows that you've been paying attention and indicates that you're evaluating them too-not just jumping at the first job opening you hear about.

Prove you're a good listener by requesting that the interviewer elaborate on something she said earlier. And use this all-time great inquiry: "What type of people excel here? It never fails to impress!

Indian schoolboy rewrites history on the Himalayas

A 17-year-old schoolboy from a New Delhi suburb, who became a climbing sensation last year by becoming the youngest Indian to conquer Mt Everest, created a new record Friday by becoming the youngest in the world to ascent Mt Lhotse, the fourth highest peak.

After an aborted attempt last week due to bad weather, Arjun Vajpai, from Noida near the Indian capital, finally stood on the 8,516 m summit at 8.15 a.m., reported Asian Trekking, the Kathmandu-based mountaineering agency that had been handling the teen's climbing expeditions since last year.

Mt Lhotse, the third highest peak in the world after Mt Everest, K2 and Kangchenjunga, had never been climbed solo by any Indian.

Five things you should never share on Facebook

Washington, May 18 (ANI): Almost every user likes to share everything on their Facebook page but certain updates can lead to criticism, embarrassment and even job termination.

So here's a shortlist of what you shouldn't share on the social networking site, reports CBS news.

1.That your job sucks.

If you say this, you could be fired.

2.That you hate your ex.

In the event that you and your boyfriend get back together, or you and that friend you had a falling out with start talking again, you'll look like a total sucker. It's okay to let your emotions govern your thoughts but keep your feelings off your Facebook until you've started to think clearly about said ex.

The important thing to remember about social networks is that although you have the option to delete your comments, sometimes it can be too late. It's immediate and someone might've laid eyes on it before your retraction.

3.That you're going on vacation and then give the dates you're away.

You could be robbed. A recent study found that thieves scan social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter for folks in targeted neighbourhoods before they strike.

4.That you love yourself.

In fact, don't give any indication that you're your biggest fan. Your followers will only think the opposite. It's the biggest barometer of insecurity. Researchers at the University at Buffalo also found that women who base their self-worth on appearance and what people think of them tend to upload pictures very frequently.

5.That you're mean.

Saying mean things about people can only make you undesirable-for potential employers, dates, friends and strangers.

However, he got into politics before Chiranjeevi and was hoping to become a CM but ended up with just one seat. That way, Chiru’s debut was good as he bagged eighteen seats. But here is the actual twist in the tale.”

The analyst added “Though he had just one seat, Vijaykanth didn’t give up and was determinedly fighting against the government. Today, he joined hands with AIADMK and bagged 27 seats with an almost guaranteed ministerial berth. Look at Chiru, despite having 18 seats, he ended up merging his seats with Congress, wiping off his party and now is in soup as Congress’s future is in jeopardy in the state. Now, he has proved to be worse than Vijaykanth.”

India's 50 most wanted terrorists

New Delhi: India has handed over to Pakistan a fresh list of its most wanted 50 fugitives allegedly hiding in that country which includes runaway don Dawood Ibrahim and some 20 members of his underworld group.

Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Haafiz Saeed tops the list, which officials said was handed over to Pakistani Interior Secretary Qamar Zaman Choudhary during his talks with Home Secretary G.K. Pillai in Delhi March 28.

It also includes LeT leaders who India says were the handlers of the 10 Pakistani terrorists who slaughtered 166 people in Mumbai during the Nov 26-29, 2008 terror attack. They are Sajid Mir, Abu Qahfa, Mazhar Iqbal and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.

The list also includes suspected army officials like Major Iqbal and Major Sameer Ali who were allegedly involved in the 2008 attack. Rehman Pasha, one of the fugitives in the list, is believed to have been the handler of the Indian Mujahideen terror group through the LeT's Karachi Project.

Predictably, Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar, who was released after the 1999 hijack of an Indian Airlines aircraft to Kandahar, also figures in the list.
